Primary Engineering Controls in Hazardous Drug Handling

Recommendations for the safe handling of HDs have been available since the early 1980s. As more research has been conducted and more groups involved, these have been coordinated in an attempt to provide uniformity. Each standard however, has a different focus. The NIOSH Alert is a broad guideline; ASHP addresses pharmacists' concerns; USP <797> deals exclusively with sterile compounding; and USP <800> is specifically on HD handling in healthcare setting.

All guidelines agree that to reduce exposure to HDs in the occupational setting, a comprehensive safety program must be developed that deals with all aspects of drug handling - from selection and receipt of product, to storage, compounding, administration, spill control and waste management.
