Esco partners with UST; 1st run of seminar – a success!

In partnership with the University of Santo Tomas’ Faculty of Pharmacy, Esco Healthcare’s TaPestle Rx conducted a seminar on “Innovative Technology on Pharmacy Compounding” last September 14, 2016 at the Antonio M. Velayo (AMV) Multipurpose Hall, University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines.

The seminar featured a simple compounding workshop and the discussion of 6 relevant topics in Pharmacy namely Pharmacy Compounding, International Standards/ Guidelines on Compounding, Primary and Secondary Engineering Control, Innovative Technology (Isolators), Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs, Automation-centered Architecture Workflow, and Robotics IV Automation (RIVA), an automated compounding system. Pharmaceutical product specialists from Esco (Vladimir Guillermo, Pharm D, Ariana Anne Baluyot, RPh, Mark Lester Romulo Sotelo, RPh and Nicole Victoria Fernandez, Pharm D) served as speakers of the various subject matters. Also, a health care professional from San Juan de Dios Hospital – Marinelle Camayra, RN shared her experience in using an isolator (CBI – Containment Barrier Isolator) which the institution have acquired from Esco.

The event aims to explain pharmacy compounding guidelines, describe the roles of the USP and the FDA with regard to standards and relevant regulatory requirements associated with compounding practices; to describe requirements and recommendations for engineering controls used in compounding as a means of understanding the value of addressing hazardous drug management and containment (personal protective equipment) issues; and to impart practice knowledge and skills among pharmacists involved in compounding and prepare them to be safer and more efficient in their workplace.

Over 200 professionals (primarily hospital pharmacists, and some from industrial, community and academic setting) and Pharmacy students, comprised the said seminar. The attendees actively and enthusiastically participated all-throughout by sharing some of their insights about pharmacy practice in the Philippines, and also dynamically contributed both during the open forum and the workshop. Moreover, they have expressed how delighted they were with the updates and learnings imparted by the seminar.

It was indeed a discerning and scholastic day to everyone who partook in the said gathering. A special shout out of congratulations to the entire UST Faculty of Pharmacy, spearheaded by their Dean, Prof. Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD, Department Chair, Asst. Prof. Mary Jho-Anne T. Corpuz, PhD, and Ms. Michelle Bartolome, MSc, for the success of this event. Furthermore, they have conveyed their excitement to do more collaborative work with Esco in the near future.

The UST Pharmacy Compounding seminar is the 3rd leg of a series of Innovative Technology End User Seminars being conducted by Tapestle Rx across Southeast Asia. The 1st leg was culminated in Hong Kong last July 9, 2016. The 2nd one was held in Jakarta, Indonesia last August 31, 2016 and the next one will be in Taipei, Taiwan. See you there!
