What to Check Before Purchasing a Biosafety Cabinet

Share

Not all biosafety cabinets offer the same level of protection. Before making your investment, ask these five essential questions to ensure your BSC delivers reliable protection, cleanliness, and long-term performance.

1. Does It Monitor and Display Airflow?

Protection starts with knowing your airflow.

Your BSC should continuously monitor and display airflow conditions, providing clear visual indicators and alarms when airflow becomes unsafe. Modern controllers use intuitive animations to help users understand the cabinet's operating status at a glance.

2. Does It Maintain Stable Airflow?

Consistent airflow means consistent protection.

Look for intelligent motor technology that automatically compensates for filter loading and fluctuations in electrical supply, helping maintain stable airflow and reliable containment performance.

Both blowers deliver the airflow they were set to. Resistance rises; the compensating motor speeds up to hold airflow. Without compensation, airflow keeps falling as the filter loads.

3. Does It Help Keep the Plenum Clean?

Protection goes beyond the work surface.

The plenum can be a difficult-to-access area where biological contamination may accumulate. Advanced antimicrobial coatings incorporating silver ions can help reduce microbial survival on treated surfaces, providing an additional layer of hygiene protection.

4. Does It Provide an ISO Class 3 Work Zone?

Cleaner air. Greater confidence.

Consider a BSC equipped with high-performance ULPA filtration, which can support an ISO Class 3 work zone under appropriate design and operating conditions. This offers a higher level of air cleanliness than ISO Class 5, depending on the cabinet's validated performance.

5. Is It Easy to Clean?

Good hygiene starts with good design.

Choose a BSC with a cGMP-inspired work zone featuring coved corners, a dished work tray, removable tray supports, and an angled drain pan. These design features improve accessibility during cleaning and help minimize areas where contamination can accumulate.

Rounded internal corners avoid tight seams where residue can collect, making them easier to wipe clean. A recessed tray helps contain spills within the work zone. Removable supports give access to the areas beneath them during cleaning. An angled pan directs liquid toward the drain, making the area beneath the tray easier to clean.

Choosing a Biosafety Cabinet? Get the Right Fit the First Time

A biosafety cabinet is a long-term investment in your people, your samples, and your results, so the choice deserves more than a spec-sheet comparison. Use these five questions as your checklist for every model you consider.

Or let our specialists do the legwork. Tell us your application, room layout, and biosafety level, and we will recommend the cabinets that match your lab and send you a quote. No obligation, just a clear answer on which models fit.
